How to Run the Book

Not financial or tax advice. Money Badger Mafia is a personal portfolio tracker, not a financial advisor, tax professional, or registered investment adviser. Every number here — prices, yields, ACB, tax estimates, CRA line items — is only as accurate as what you type in or import. Miss a slip, mis-key a box, or import a stale statement and the output will be wrong even though the math is right. Nothing here is filed, reviewed, or blessed by the CRA. Check your own paperwork and have a qualified tax professional verify everything before you file or make a money decision.

Five minutes to a working book.

  1. Sign in on the Street (or stay a guest — guest data lives only on this device).
  2. Go to the Tracker and either import a broker CSV / statement screenshot, or post your lots by hand on the Buy or sell ticket.
  3. Pick the account on every ticket: Non-registered or TFSA. ACB and ROC only matter in the non-registered book.
  4. Let distributions land — they post to The Take on their own; spend that cash with a plain Cash buy.
  5. Come tax time, pull your slips on the Accountant desk and apply them to your ACB.

The rule that keeps your interest deductible.

There is no cash pool in this book, on purpose. CRA does not test a bucket — it tests direct tracing: each borrowed dollar has to land in an income-earning investment. So every buy names its source. Cash buy is your own money, including distributions you collected. Bookie buy and Smith buy are borrowed, and each one opens a draw stamped with the ticker, shares and price — that stamp is your audit trail for line 22100.

When you sell something that borrowed money bought, the current use rule kicks in and the ticket makes you say where the money went: pay the line down (the principal retires), reinvest into a named position (the loan follows the money and stays deductible), or take it personally (that slice stops being deductible).

The trace panel on the Bookie and Smith desks shows how much borrowed principal is still at work, how much has gone offside, and any sale that never declared a use.

Buy or sell, on the Tracker.

  • Cash Buy

Your own money — a fresh deposit or cash already sitting in the account, including distributions you collected. Nothing is borrowed, so no draw is booked and Growth Bro copies the deposit.

  • Bookie Buy

Bought with borrowed money on the brokerage margin line. Books a draw on the Bookie desk carrying the ticker, shares and price, which is the direct trace CRA wants for the interest on line 22100.

  • Smith Buy

Bought with HELOC money under the Smith Manoeuvre. Books a draw on the Smith desk instead of the margin line.

  • DRIP

Shares the fund handed you automatically. No new money moves; the lot inherits the funding of the position that threw it off.

  • Sell

Ordinary sale. The realized gain/loss is calculated against your ACB in the non-registered book. If any of the lot was borrowed, the ticket asks where the money went.

  • Bookie Sell

Sale of something bought on margin. The current use rule applies: pay down the line, redeploy into a named position so the loan follows the money, or take it personally and lose the deduction on that slice.

  • Smith Sell

Sale of something bought on the HELOC. Same current use choice as a Bookie sell, against the Smith desk.

  • Cash Received

A distribution that landed as cash. Enter shares held and cash per share; it counts as income received and is yours to spend or buy with.

Same list the header nav uses.

  • Street

The front door: sign in or keep playing as a guest, jump to a desk, tip the badger.

    • Sign in with email or Google to sync the book to the cloud, or stay a guest to keep everything on this device only.
    • Signing out wipes the local copy, so export from The Safe first if you are a guest.
    • Save progress in the top-right shows whether the book is saved to device or cloud.
  • Tracker

The Book: holdings, The Take, distribution calendar, Growth Bro, imports and The Safe.

    • Monthly Income Goal at the top shows the combined non-registered and TFSA run-rate.
    • Buy or sell sits under The Book — pick the account, pick the ticket mode, post it.
    • The Crew lists every position; tap one to see stats or edit the average cost per share.
    • Prints waiting to be booked land in The Take automatically as distributions are confirmed.
    • Import desk takes Wealthsimple CSVs, statement screenshots, or a book reconcile against a holdings screenshot.
    • The Safe exports/imports JSON, restores the last undo, and can reset the book to zero.
  • Accountant

The whole tax desk: T3/T5 slips, T4s and other income forms, ACB reconciliation, obligation tables, the T1 General worksheet, CRA paperwork and the line 22100 interest record.

    • Use the T3/T5 finder to pull slips by ticker, or run a batch sweep for every holding with prints in the reporting year.
    • Apply a slip to push its per-unit ROC into your non-registered ACB.
    • Save T4s and other slips (T4A, T4RSP, etc.); scanning a photo fills the boxes for you.
    • Personal and Combined obligation tables stack investment income on top of employment income.
    • The T1 General fills itself from every slip, distribution, disposition and paid interest dollar — edit any line, save it, then print to PDF or export CSV.
    • Paperwork prefills and exports the CRA forms tied to your book — batch fill and batch export included.
    • Interest 365 shows what was charged versus what was actually paid — only paid interest carries to line 22100.
  • Bookie

The margin line: draws, payments, deductible carry and line 22100.

    • Set the APR, your marginal rate (or import it from a saved income slip) and the approved credit limit.
    • Book draws and payments on the ticket; Loan used and Still available update immediately.
    • Carry shows the after-tax cost of the borrowed money against what the positions actually pay.
  • Smith

The Smith Manoeuvre desk: HELOC draws, payments, the conversion simulator and the CRA glossary.

    • The Smith desk carries its own HELOC rate, tax rate and limit — separate from the Bookie's margin line.
    • Tick which draws in the loan book belong to the Smith strategy.
    • Book Smith draws and payments here; the Bookie totals exclude them.
  • Business

Cost of doing business: equal capital vs XEQT, MER + TER, margin interest and whether you are ahead.

    • Growth Bro mirrors only new money you actually deposited or borrowed, so DRIP shares never flatter the comparison.
    • Price move only strips distributions so fees inside NAV are compared fairly.
    • Fee gap and wealth missed show what the MER + TER spread is costing you against the rival.
  • Mini Game

The street game plus the Tax Donkey total-burden tracker.

    • Properties appreciate and pay rent, vehicles depreciate, crew members pay wages, weapons protect rent.
    • Tax Donkey aggregates payroll tax from saved income slips plus consumption taxes; scan receipts to add expenses.

  • As a guest it lives on this device only — export JSON from The Safe regularly.
  • Reset book to zero clears everything; the last state is stashed so you can undo it.

This tutorial is generated from the app's live desk list and ticket modes, so it updates itself whenever a feature is added or removed.

Voluntary tip — no goods or services are provided.
